Anxiety is more than just a passing worry—it can feel like a heavy cloud hanging over our lives. Ignoring anxiety can come at a high cost, affecting our happiness, health, and ability to contribute positively to our communities. It's important to understand that acting on anxiety is much less costly than allowing it to take control.
The thought of addressing anxiety can be overwhelming. We often become so used to our daily stress that the idea of calm can feel foreign. Yet, living in constant anxiety holds us back from being our true selves. For many, this inner struggle leads to feelings of frustration, isolation, and despair.
Understanding the Cycle of Anxiety
When I mention the "negative cycle," I mean the familiar experience of being stuck in a pattern of anxiety and avoidance. This cycle can start the moment you wake up, often filled with tension that leads to avoiding social situations or even everyday tasks. For instance, if the thought of attending a family gathering fills you with dread, you might choose to skip it altogether. While it feels easier in the moment, this avoidance only fuels the anxiety further.
Many individuals find that even the discomfort of trying to achieve a calmer state is unbearable. Surprisingly, returning to a state of anxiety—while painful—can feel more familiar than the unknown of peace.
The Price We Pay for Inaction
Chronic anxiety can result in feelings of exhaustion, irritability, and hopelessness. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, anxiety disorders affect 40 million adults in the United States, leading to significant economic implications. It is estimated that the cost of untreated anxiety in terms of lost productivity and increased health care spending exceeds $42 billion each year.
These costs are not just personal—they extend to our families and communities. When we neglect our mental health, we contribute to a cycle that can lead to relationship strain, reliance on harmful coping mechanisms like substance abuse, and increased health care costs. As a society, we may pay the price through higher taxes to fund mental health services and emergency care.
A Call to Awareness
Awareness is key in breaking free from anxiety. If you're feeling trapped or overwhelmed, please know you are not alone. Recognizing these feelings is a powerful step toward healing.
If you’ve noticed a loved one struggling, encouraging them to seek help is just as significant. We all have a role to play in creating an environment where mental health is prioritized and openly discussed.
Taking Action: Your Path to Authenticity
Facing anxiety can be challenging but remember that the consequences of inaction are far worse. Instead of feeling imprisoned by fear, embrace the opportunity to live a vibrant, fulfilling life.
For instance, consider taking small steps toward change right now. This could be just breathing in (right now). Inhale. Count to 4 on the way in. Hold it for 2. Exhale for 4...and repeat.
It could also mean putting your phone in another room for a few minutes at a time. Many of us are realizing that we don't need any more information going into our brain, we need peace of mind and some positive action on our own part.
Write. Get a pen and paper (not a computer) and start writing and/or drawing what you are experiencing (there is more to this strategy than that, but for now, just produce something on paper and then email me if you want suggestions on what to do with it afterward).
These strategies are not guaranteed to take your anxiety away, but they should produce enough relief in the moment to get you to your next step. They work for me. I cannot do it for you. As a matter of fact, other people or external circumstances are very likely the cause of how you got here to begin with, am I right? It is time for YOU to do something with YOU, for YOU, by YOU.
This next one may sound like a paradox or a contradiction, but maybe it is time for YOU to consider contacting a mental health professional, or even joining a support group. I think you would be pleasantly surprised at how many of us there are all around you. ;)
Each of these actions contributes to breaking the cycle and can lead to significant personal growth and community healing.
The Responsibility We Share
Our mental health journey does not only affect us personally; it impacts everyone around us. Prioritizing our well-being ultimately leads to a healthier community.
There’s an increasing awareness about the emotional and psychological hurdles many of us face. It’s time we ask ourselves: what steps can we take to change this? Collective action can feel daunting, yet each person's commitment to understanding their mental health contributes to a broader societal change.
A Journey Worth Taking
Breaking the chains of anxiety is essential, not just for personal freedom but also for the collective well-being of society. Each of us deserves to escape the grip of anxiety, allowing us to build a better world together.
If you’re ready to take proactive steps, know that the path to your authentic self is enriched with possibilities—if you take that first action. Encourage those around you to seek the help they need, and don't hesitate to reach out yourself.
Together, let’s begin a movement to break the cycle of anxiety and create a reality where peace and joy are attainable for all.
