If you have been waiting for a '90s revival, check out Milwaukee's Jake Paul Band. That decade never left their hearts, if The Jailbreak is any indication. The group's trick is that they don't take any one style from that time in wholesale form, but instead mix and match in such a way as to be revivalists with an original spin on their source material. Paul raps and sings while the rest of his quintet bridges the chasm between the pop-jam-band templates of Blues Traveler, Widespread Panic and Rusted Root and Sublime's stoner-ish punk reggae. If that combination seems jaunty and easygoing, Paul confounds it all (largely in a good way) by baring his soul with lyrics that sound like the efforts of a man stumbling from an abyss to find the sunshine that still makes him squint in pain.

Chris Ellen Paul was 33 when she was fatally shot by her boyfriend, leaving behind three children and many unanswered questions (no one was prosecuted). The youngest child, Jake Paul, turned an emotionally troubled youth around by writing and performing music. In less than 1 year he and his band (Jake Paul Band) have played at Milwaukee’s finest, including Shank Hall, Intercontinental Hotel, The Rave, Up & Under Pub, 88.9 Radio Milwaukee, and they’ve recently signed a record deal with indie label, Anamoly Records, LLC.
“I signed with ‘Anamoly Records’ because I feel like I am an anomaly. I came from a tough place and I’ve been able to escape…I finally found peace,” Paul explains. “My music gives me a chance to connect with other people who have lived through rough times and turned those times around like I did. And that helps us heal.”
Paul plays the guitar and harmonica, but his most influential instrument is his hip-hop influenced lyric. “Even at singer/songwriter shows, people come up after and comment on my unique style. I’ve heard that I’m a mix between Citizen Cope and Sublime.”
Not only has Jake Paul survived a life of tragedy and trauma, he has earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Master’s Degree in At-Risk Education. “This guy is the hardest working new artist we’ve worked with,” states Los Angeles booking agent, Todd Murphy (www.toddmurphygroup.com). “Most of our artists don’t come ‘performance –ready’ like Jake did. We are lucky we found him.”
Jake Paul Band is now touring the Midwest and is recording in Milwaukee’s Studio Z. They are expected to release their debut album in Spring, 2011. JPB will be competing in the final round of the “Break Into The Big Gig” battle of the bands competition on Friday, April 15th at The Up & Under Pub (1216 E. Brady St).
UPDATE: SATURDAY, APRIL 16th

Jake Paul Band earned a spot in the Milwaukee Journal/Sentinel's ON STAGE section next to Lady GaGa, Alice Cooper, KISS, and others.
THE JAKE PAUL BAND
Laid-back local acoustic crooner Jake Paul and his band channel acts such as Jack Johnson and Sublime, the kind of beachy campfire jamming that owes more to southern California than southeastern Wisconsin.
But on the self-titled EP being released at the show, Paul touches on some weighty material, including his mother's still unsolved murder. But like Sublime, even the darker songs never stray too far from a ray of sunshine.
Paul, who got his start freestyle rapping at fraternity parties, shifts between his original acoustic ballads and long-form improvisational jamming in the live setting.
